It is entirely possible that Nathan Abshire heard both the Ledbelly and Breaux Brothers songs but they were merely influences in his mind, not an active adaptation as the Wikipedia article seems to imply.

Nathan Abshire is clearly heard explaining in a You Tube video how his music came to be. Basically, he says that he would have some ideas that would come together in his mind and when they were set, his song would be the result.

He also clearly states that his use of the term, "Négresse" did not imply a Black woman but his actual wife (who was White). He emphatically states that it is a term of endearment, not an insult. Therefore, the English translation to "Honey", while it loses much in the translation, is appropriate.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07163800924600699458noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5998039984614993457.post-14690027685685202782016-12-06T14:51:13.725-08:002016-12-06T14:51:13.725-08:00I think there's some adaptation here, but most...I think there's some adaptation here, but most likely, it didn't come from an English version, but most likely from the Breaux Brother's "Petite Chien" recording which borrows from the same lyrical theme.WFhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05663277462772045636noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5998039984614993457.post-57397800204347969592016-05-23T05:33:09.438-07:002016-05-23T05:33:09.438-07:00Hi, thanks for this article. What do you make of the lyrical similarities between The Pine Grove Blues and 'In The Pines' (AKA 'Black Girl' and 'Where Did You Sleep Last Night')?
